Bifacial Solar Case Study: Chengmari Tea Estate, Jalpaiguri

Tea processing is one of the most energy-intensive agro-industries in North Bengal. Withering, rolling, fermentation, and drying run in near-continuous cycles during the plucking season, and every unit of grid or diesel power consumed eats directly into a garden’s margins. For Chengmari Tea Estate in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, that reality was the starting point of a project that went on to become a landmark for the entire Indian solar industry: the country’s first bifacial solar installation, delivered through Tata Power Solar’s Authorized Channel Partner network by SolarLogix.

The Challenge: High Energy Costs on High-Value Land

Like most tea estates in the Dooars region, Chengmari runs its own processing factory alongside cultivation, which means power costs are a fixed, recurring drain rather than a seasonal one. Rising grid tariffs and diesel generator dependency were pushing up the cost of every kilogram of processed tea, while the estate’s leadership was looking for a solution that wouldn’t compromise the arable and shaded land the tea bushes themselves depend on.

That constraint shaped the entire brief: the solar system had to deliver industrial-scale generation without competing for valuable estate land, and it had to be engineered to perform reliably through North Bengal’s humid, cloud-heavy climate.

Why this mattered:  A standard monofacial ground-mount system would have needed a larger footprint to hit the same generation target — land a working tea estate can’t easily spare. Bifacial panels changed that equation.

The Solution: A 1040 kW Bifacial Ground-Mounted System

Tata Power SolarLogix designed and executed a 1,040 kW ground-mounted solar plant using bifacial modules — panels that generate electricity from both the front and rear surfaces, capturing direct sunlight on top and reflected/diffused light from the ground and surroundings underneath. On a ground-mount structure at height, this typically adds a meaningful generation bonus over an equivalent monofacial system without expanding the land footprint.

As a Tata Power Solar Authorized Channel Partner, SolarLogix executed the project with TATA-certified components and structural design suited to the site’s soil and wind-loading conditions, positioning Chengmari as the first commercial deployment of bifacial technology in India.

Performance and Financial Results

Since commissioning, the plant has consistently generated substantial daily output for the estate’s processing operations, translating into significant annual savings and a fast payback period for the investment.

Metric Result
Average Generation 3,702.4 units/day
Annual Savings ₹1,14,86,696
Return on Investment (ROI) 28.73%
Payback Period 3.48 years

With a payback period well under four years and a solar asset rated for 25+ years of operation, Chengmari Tea Estate now runs the majority of its processing load on power it generates itself, insulated from further grid tariff hikes and reduced diesel dependency.

Why Bifacial Technology Fits Agro-Industrial Sites

Tea estates, orchards, and other agro-processing units share a common constraint: land is a productive asset, not just real estate. Bifacial panels are particularly well suited here because:

  • Higher yield per acre — rear-side generation adds output without a larger array footprint
  • Elevated ground-mount structures preserve usable land beneath and around the array where feasible
  • Better performance in diffused light — relevant for North Bengal’s monsoon and cloud-cover patterns
  • Long-term durability — dual-glass bifacial construction typically offers stronger degradation resistance over 25 years

Engineering Execution

Delivering India’s first bifacial installation meant SolarLogix’s engineering team had to validate structural design, row spacing, and elevation specifically for bifacial gain — standard monofacial ground-mount specs don’t automatically apply. The project was executed end-to-end: site assessment, structural design, TATA Power certified component sourcing, installation, and commissioning, followed by ongoing performance monitoring through SolarLogix’s platform.

Ongoing monitoring:  Chengmari’s plant performance is tracked in real time via SolarLogix’s monitoring platform, giving the estate visibility into daily generation, consumption offset, and system health without manual tracking.

What This Project Represents

Beyond the numbers, Chengmari Tea Estate’s plant is a proof point for what’s possible when industrial and agricultural sites in West Bengal adopt solar technology ahead of the curve. It demonstrated that bifacial systems aren’t just a lab concept — they’re commercially viable and financially sound for large energy consumers in North Bengal’s tea belt, and it set a template SolarLogix has since applied across other commercial and industrial projects in the region.
